My Review and First Impressions Of 6th Ed
Posted by: Nc89 - 10-02-2012, 02:14 PM - Forum: Warhammer 40k - Replies (3)

This is my review of Warhammer 40K 6th ed.

“Disclaimer time, this is my own personal review, opinions and observations ,do I not claim to be a rule god/awesome player. I won’t touch on everything here either Smile

Also this is a basic review, it isn’t from a WAAC/ competitive standpoint. Its general observations and predictions .

It’s early days I know, but first impressions are always interesting to me and remember you only get to make the “first impression” once. Well ive got a lot of games of 6th ed under my belt and I am enjoying the new edition. It’s not completely different from 5th there’s a lot of things introduced and things left out. (No Fearless saves make my green skins smile for example)

As many of you will know that the majority of games played in the club are 40k games. I have noticed that 40k down in the club has been put on the back burner with some players (and that’s fine, we all don’t have time to play/get down with life etc.) with a few dudes not picking the rulebook and reading it and also lots of other reasons.

I personally felt I couldn’t really be bothered to relearn rules etc and I left 40k a few weeks because I personally felt burnt out with it. It good to take a break from the club/whatever you’re playing as it helps to recreate passion for it. After all you’ve spent all this money!
BUT! Now am back, I find it exciting to relearn rules, review lists and change my views on things. The new edition has made 40k fresh for me at the moment.

Ok first off we have one major change. Premeasuring. Remember we drilled it into our heads that we aren’t allowed to premeasure? Yeah forget that…

One issue I have noticed is that unit and model positioning is ESSENTIAL. With the new shooting and wound allocation rules the closest model is killed off first. So if you have a special wep or Mr sgt with power fist and you need him to live, it’s usually better off if he leads from the back off the unit with all the “nobodies” in front. (Heroic isn’t it?)

Games can be won just by out manoeuvring the enemy and good model placement. One example would be when I played Rowan the other day. I had a commissar in a blob squad chilling at the back of the unit. Next thing the Leman Russ that he was leaning against exploded, doing a high number of wounds to the unit, killing “Mr Commissarman” first as he was the closest model. I lost my LD9 stubborn Sad! Lolz then a single Necron lord killed of the entire Blob by killing a few dudes and then running them down.

Although this is an extreme case, it was exciting when it happened as this wouldn’t happen in 5th.

Of course in 6th vehicles took abit of a nerf, but really i feel they have been put back in their place. In 5th ed, my rhino could get hit by a lascannon, then the enemy would roll a 1 it would be shaken. Next turn that rhino would still be there with it’s “efficiency ” unaffected although not doing anything.

If a lascannon hit my house there would be a crater were it used to be lol! It was silly! (Appling logic/ common sense in 40k is usually not a good idea but it’s an example)

In 6th ed and Damage table changed abit (take 5th ed chart and remove “wrecked result” and bump “everything” up by one with shaken being 1 and 2 on the chart), it’s basically harder to one shot vehicles overall. Hull points will ensure that the previous example I gave will not happen continuality, by reducing the vehicles “Wounds”/hull points.

While people cried out against this nerf to vehicles and swore to never take vehicles/tanks ever again! I personally feel that you still need transports and support vehicles.

Take this example, I would rather have a loota unit shoot at my 35pt transport rather than my 190point squad inside which is going to hold objectives and win me the game.

One other reason is 5/6 games are now objective based with many of them being “random VP totals”. You need to get to these to win the game! If your opponent has the “high vp” objectives you better take them off them because he isn’t going to move if he can just hold em and then win. Also If you footslogging it you might never get there due to enemy shooting and terrain.

Next throw in the new deployment types! That Hammer and Anvil deployment is awesome, you deploy along the short table edges and if you have rolled an objective mission you better hope you get up the table to secure objectives. Just remember vehicles can’t contest or hold objectives even though there might be a scoring unit inside those lazy gits have to get out to hold it.

While I don’t see people taking as many vehicles in 6th compared to 5th , they’re still very, very important.

Throw in allies into the mix and we get combos we have never seen before. This is pretty straight forward, it allows you to take units which you either like for fluff reasons or in-game reasons. I think everybody benefited from this (apart from poor nids). You can look at your army and say “what is this lists’ weakness?”

Then skim over the allies chart to see if there are any armies which might help with this role. For example Guard/orks/Tau can nearly ally with everybody, that’s awesome. Gives you options, you need more bodies for your list? Fine take orks. You need superior anti-infantry/tank shooting? Take Tau/Guard.(Double check to see who you can ally with as there might be restrictions)

There’s almost endless combos that this gives and it opens the game up.

I am enjoying 6th and there is plenty more for me to discover and talk about. I intend to revisit this post and update it.

Anybody else got any more things they wish to discuss?

Apparently White Dwarf is getting an overhaul. Wonder what this means? I'm curious and hopeful but expecting disappointment.

I haven't bought it in a while now myself last one I got was the flyers edition and only because it had the rules in it. If I had thought I might play demons I may have got that edition.

Honestly though I don't enjoy reading it which is a shame because I loved it as a kid it has been a major let down since I got back into the hobby last year. It almost feels like your paying £4.50 for an advert that you can get on their webby for free.

From what ive read its got around 2 and a half inches on a dreadknight and is as much smaller than the warhound titan 250mm vs 215.

I think with a little work that could be made to look fantastic and since thier working with wargames factory the price isnt gonna be lethal

A squat army using Space Marine rules?
Posted by: necrongaz - 08-12-2012, 05:48 PM - Forum: Warhammer 40k - Replies (3)

I'm putting this out to the collective brain trust to see if its viable or not. I was thinking of using mantic forgefathers as the army core (with modified landspeeders etc for extra stuff they don't do).

So with the base models selected would the space marine codex work with them? They both have high toughness and good armour and I'm sure I could pop them into tanks and the like to show new pilots and gunners.
