Obviously no use for tourneys but for fun club local games where you can be true to ur Dark Side its a bit of fun that hopefully won't get mangled by cheese heads.

It looks well written !

So, why don't YOU play in tournaments?
Posted by: J65 - 02-23-2011, 11:50 PM - Forum: Warhammer 40k - Replies (15)

Hi, for those that don't know me I'm Jonny Fisher. I'm a member of the Northern Wasters club, captain of the Northern Ireland 40K team, and a complete tournament junkie. I enjoy running tournaments almost as much as playing in them, and those that I've been running recently have been very well received (here's a review of our last event). We've generally been getting decent attendance, but I am concerned about one thing: We don't seem to be attracting new tournament players from the local clubs.

When I decided to get back into running tournaments, after taking a couple of years out of the hobby (wargaming seems to be a cyclic kinda thing. Don't sell your armies when your interest ebbs, it saves you having to buy them back later) the first thing I did was canvass all the main clubs to find out what they wanted from a tournament. I asked a lot of questions, asked people to rank tournament features in order of importance etc, until I had a good idea of what people wanted from tournaments, and then used that information to put on events that people would enjoy. So I'm now going to do something similar, to try to increase the pool of players for NI events.

So here're a few questions to kick things off (I only really know about WFB and 40K so any event I run will likely be for those systems):

1 - Have you played in a wargaming tournament before?
1.1 - Did you enjoy the experience, and if not why not?

2 - Would you like to play in a tournament?

3 - Have any of the following factors put you off attending a tournament:
3.1 - The price
3.2 - The location
3.3 - The rules pack
3.4 - Not having a painted army
3.5 - You get a bunch of assholes and rules lawyers at tournaments
3.6 - You don't think that you're good enough to play in a tournament
3.7 - You're just not really into competitive gaming
3.8 - You hate J65 and/or the Northern Wasters

4 - If you were considering attending a tournament, what factors about the event would persuade you to go?

Please reply on this thread, drop me a pm, or send an email to northernwasters@gmail.com

The recent tournaments we've been running have been designed with the (very) competitive gamer in mind. We've been getting some of the top tournament players on the island, with the nastiest of lists, playing as hard as the rules allow. This is obviously not a great environment for the tournament virgin, but I can run other events as well. One option is the narrative campaign tournament, where you add some interesting and unusual scenarios and some wacky random events, and maximum fun over deadly competition is the order of the day. Alternatively I could run a more 'normal' event, but with emphasis on introducing players to the tournament scene. By not entering the results into the Irish Rankings, and by warning the sharks what the event is about, players could get the competitive gaming experience, without getting jumped on by some points hungry rules lawyer.

Would either of those formats appeal to you?

Please feel free to ask me any questions or to rant about what's wrong with tournaments.

Thanks for your time,

This sucks, I finally get around to digging out my old Lizardman army in the hope that i'd find something useful, I find some sauras, a slan, a couple of what I think are hunting packs and nearly 60 skinks, great I thought.....

I'm heartbroken Sad I know they have skirmishers with blowpipes but its just not the same Sad This is what happens when you stop playing fantasy for 10 years.
