Quick question - do you get any skills or advances for heroes with starting experience?

No, you don't. Pity.

The reason that heroes start with experience is so that your more advanced guys level up slower. (cos first few levels are v quick to get)

E.g. youngbloods level up superfast, leaders relatively slowly (in early game)
